What the heck is this

Postby Jimmy Gibson » Wed Apr 10, 2013 8:55 pm

I have removed my original text because I know maybe it has nothing to do with me and maybe I should just mind my own business and keep my comments to myself but it was 'because when i read the profile on a member i looked at their web page and thought this has nothing to do with steel guitar :? an there`s a chance it could be seen by some of the members kids that come on the BSS Sorry to have to bring it up.

Unfortunately this is a problem all over, it's not targetted at the BSS.

Some forums, including this one, are open to the public for anyone to register, and part of that registration includes entering a web address. While we actively monitor first posts (rough guess about 20+ per day get refused) the user accounts associated with them remain until pruned (see Memberlist Pruning).

We (the BSS moderation / admin team) do all we can to keep offensive posts from being published, with probably a 99.99% success rate (with the exception of an offensive post made by an existing member who was quickly put on the moderation list, and shortly after banned).

As for your concerns re member's children - it's a fact of life that children should always have any internet activity supervised, I'm afraid.

You are absolutely right but children are not always supervised on the internet so that is why I thought I should make it known about these new members profile ect.

Hello Jimmy,
Only caught some of the drift as I haven't been on lately. If you go to my web site you will find its about me, cycling, my history of prof. road racing motorcycles and my music page. I am assuming, (put me right if I'm wrong) that this might relate to the plethora of bogus sites that are in fact sex traps and the like. I have another site which deals solely with French vineyards and wine, and we get the same problem. If you're open to the general public it just 'ain't easy to stop. I wish I could stop it but it just not possible, we just have to rely on people like yourself who point potential traps and cons out to us, if we have missed them.

And another new member with a web page showing guns and knives, it's in a foreign language so I haven't got a clue what it`s all about

It certainty has nothing to do with the steel guitar.

That "member" has now also been deleted, but I repeat what I said in the other thread earlier today: -
Arcada wrote:Can I remind everyone that they click on member profiles at their own risk. While the "dodgy" ones can't post without moderation, any information they've entered into their profile is still visible, including any web addressess which could lead to unsavoury material (including pornographic and / or virus infected websites).

You know what curiosity did to the cat! If the member's username is stupid and the member has 0 posts, it's highly likely they're dodgy and you shouldn't click on their web links. They will be pruned in the next round of pruning.....

Of cause you are right once again and I know we open them up at our own risk, and maybe I should have been more careful , but how would we know what they are up to unless we took a chance and had a look, I thought It was the right thing to do in bringing them to your attention now I'm not sure ,so to be on the safe side, from now on I won`t open up anymore new members profile or internet sites and leave someone ells to find out if they are dodgy.

Keep up the good work ...Jimmy

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your efforts, but I wouldn't recommend clicking on them that's all. The memberslist gets regularly pruned where all members with 0 posts (which these fakes all fall into, as their spam posts are never published) are deleted. There are easily 20+ of these registrations per day and, to be honest, while we appreciate the effort reporting them doesn't really help as it's an ongoing battle.

Adding to the Q&A registration challenge (see the link above) would be much better help :)
