And you think you have heard of every steel player

Mon Nov 11, 2019 1:08 pm

Through this wonderful forum I thought I had heard of every steel players in Britain, last night I was playing at the Silloth Country Festival where I had the pleasure of meeting Ray Phillips, who was playing a beautiful Sheffield Steel.
I would just like to mention that he was an absolute delight to hear and speak with.

Not all steel players are as captivated by the instrument as others, and they can't be bothered to join internet forums etc to discuss their instrument.

To them, they just get the steel out of its case at a gig, play, get the money, put the steel back in its case till the next gig, and go home.

I met one of these guys once, who was a very good player, and I was astonished at his lack of interest in the PSG, it was just another day at the office to him

Hi, I am (slowly) learning pedal steel. Let me add to this....I also find it strange when someone does not study the history or the famous players of an instrument. This lack of interest comes across as a bit disrespectful to me. An instrument like the pedal steel did not just "happen," its a wonderful story and learning about the people involved that created what we have today is a huge part of its charm. I am an ethnomusicologist by trade....thats the academic study of the people involved in the music. I find the pedal steel scene fascinating. Kind Regards to all.
