Steel seat/case wanted

Chris, thank you very much for posting this review! I think I will put one of these on my Christmas list - I have an old steel seat but it is actually a bit high for me (I am quite short, so a 21" seat means I am playing on tiptoe!), so the chance of getting a comfortable seat without the need to perform acts of carpentry or metalwork is quite appealing. Let's see what Santa brings.

I took the seat out this weekend to a rehearsal and then to a video recording session, and have a few more observations. First, it is a little unwieldy to carry with the shoulder strap rather than a handle, but may simply take time to get used to it. Second, when you release the seat and tip it backwards to access the box underneath it can make the entire seat tip over in the same direction. I learned to hold on to the seat to stop this from happening. Finally, depending on your transport, it may be necessary to remove the legs to fit the seat upright into a car boot, for example. I didn't have to do that but it was tight. Still, for the money, I reckon it's okay.

Well father xmas did treat me kind. Got one which is an improvement on the folding kitchen stool I usually use. I like the way it can be opened from front or back. The top tray takes effects pedals with no problem and plenty of space underneath for volume pedal and cables etc. As for height - well getting used to it. If I needed to I would call in at diy store and find square section steel or alloy of similar size. Only two holes need be drilled on each leg and plastic inserts for the feet. Love it.

Used the seat for the first time last night and came upon a problem although easily fixed. Each catch also acts as a hinge and as they are fitted all round allows the box to be completely dismantled. I prefer to just open from the front so that's exactly what I did. As there is no stay, the top can fold right back putting strain on the hinge area with the weight of the backrest and also a tendency to pull on the back panel. I intend to prevent this from happening by restricting the lids from moving any further than just over 90 degrees. How? Tape or chord similar to that fitted to some guitar cases, or the use of a cabinet folding stay on each opening section.

These faults discovered by Chris Tweed and myself is a very small penalty to pay considering the cost of the seat plus, any minor modifications, is still way below the price of similar purpose designed seats.

I had a similar problem with the seat I made and have used a sink plug chain to act as a stay for holding the seat, I find that the socket holding the balls in this chain is a bit light and has pulled out, so I am going to replace it with a small size galvanised link chain as with gravity the chain falls into the seat easily as its being closed and unravels quickly on opening.
Hope this helps and that no " lavy " chain goes missing!

Any combined seats and cases out there? I want to stop carrying a drum seat and separate case with volume pedal, strings, leads etc. I need something with a height of 21".
