Socket head pullrods

Sat Dec 03, 2022 11:27 am

I want to restore my Sho-Bud 6139 so am looking for 11 - socket head pull rods with 5/32" allen head. Also if there is one about - volume and tone pot with mounting plate.

I have a shed full of pull rods Mick but the socket screws would be difficult...

Thanks for that JD. I have found a source in the USA at a cost of 12 dollars for 2. Bearing in mind these are not pushed out in vast numbers I suppose the price is reasonable but the cost of shipping might increase that a bit. Would rather search in the UK before I follow that option.

Hi Mick,
When you say 5/32 do you mean the size of the allen key or the size of the screw. Because a you would use a 5/32 allen key on a 10-32 UNF screw.

I take it that the pull rods are 1/8 inch (0.125") dia. in which case you could take standard 10-32 screws (with shoulder), cut of the threaded part down to the shoulder, drill and tap say 5-40. Cut a short 5-40 thread on the end of 0.125" pull rod and fit with red loctite-271 (permanent).

One difficulty would be to find someone with a lathe (for accuracy, although it would be possibel with a quality drill press) to do the work that works out cheaper than importing from psgparts.com.
Your biggest difficuly may be finding a source of 1/8 inch rod this side of the pond. (we've been metric for too long).

Are the originals that beat up you need to replace them?

Hope this helps

Pete

Mick,
Have you got a screw that you can post on here? As I have several screws etc from my old Sho bud collection of bits and pieces.

This is the link to the required rods from PSGparts so I am taking the measurements from them.

https://www.psgparts.com/Pull-Rod-Set-C ... F-SOCK.htm

I do not have any of the original rods as they were replaced by a previous owner for those with the plastic hex fitting. Just wanted to get back to original spec.

I have considered making my own but do not have the necessary machinery to do this. I will get these from USA if necessary - that way I will have usa measurements as per the original.

Hi Mike,
browsing the U.S. Forum came across information :-

6139's were originally rack and barrel, but for a brief period - 74,75 - Sho-Bud made a model 6139 that had 2 hole pullers and nylon tuners.

Is it possible that yours is a 74 or 75? Would save the bother of changing to allen screws.

Mine is rack and barrel and was built in November 1971.

I tell a lie. It was earlier than that. Actually manufactured in April 1971. Serial number 1050.
