The new speakers from Telonics are now in stock, in the UK.

If you don't know about these - In the 60's and 70's the JBL D120 and D130 were extensively use for recording - a great sounding speaker. Using modern materials Telonics have developed a speaker which has a curve very close to that of the old JBL.

The TSNEO-12-4 is a 12" speaker and the TSNEO-15-4 is a 15" speaker. Both speakers are rated at 300W, have an impedance of 4 Ohms and use a light weight neodymium magnet. The 12" speaker weighs 3.27kgs and is 14.30cm deep. The 15" speaker weighs 3.52kgs and is 17.15cm deep.

The price of the 12" speaker is £208.00 and the price of the 15" speaker is £213.00. The carriage price within the UK is £13.50 plus £4.00 for insurance. So the price of a the 12" speaker shipped is £225.50 and the price of a 15" speaker shipped is £230.50.

Just for reference:

1) Evans Cab Installation
Fitted a Telonics 15" speaker in an Evans SES200 cabinet - The speaker is fixed from the front, so you need to remove the grill; it's just fixed with velcro. After removing the old speaker you need to carefully remove the gasket from the rear fixing face of the old speaker basket; this is easily done with a sharp knife. With the cab face up, lay the gasket in position and then lay the new speaker in position. The Telonics speaker fixing holes line up nicely with the cabinet fixing holes.

Important* When you tighten up the speaker fixing screws, first of all just take up the slack. When you start to tighten them up do it in a cross pattern so pressure is applied evenly around the basket fixing face. It's most important not to over tighten the fixing screws / nuts; it's surprising easy to distort the basket of any speaker. The way I do it is to grip the shaft of a screwdriver between my fingers and only tighten using the force that can be applied this way. Having tightened it up finger tight, I then apply no more than another 1/4 turn. If this starts to feel tight I don't even go the full 1/4. Just for interest, an engineer who had worked for JBL for many years looking at speaker failures told Dave Beaty over tightening of the speaker fixings was the number 1 cause of failures in his experience. When the basket gets distorted the cone suspension is twisted which means the voice coil sits off center in the core. A combination of the a restricted cone movement caused by the twisting and the voice coil sitting out of position causes overheating of the voice coil and premature failure. It should also be noted that once distorted by over-tightening the basket may not return to shape by loosening off the screws and a twisted basket can significantly affect the sound of a speaker.

2) Nashville 400 Installation
We've also fitted a Telonics 15" speakers in a Nashville 400 - The speaker is fixed from the rear; to remove the old Black Widow speaker you will need to remove both back panels and the reverb in its bag. The reverb makes it hard to access the two lower fixing nuts and as previously mentioned it's important to be able to judge the tightness of these nuts when fittng the new speaker. You will also need to remove the chassis fixing screws and lift it out to access the fixing nut covered by the transformer. The Telonics speaker fits nicely on the Peavey fixing studs - be careful not to lower the speaker onto the studs and put a hole in the cone. Carefully tighten up the fixing nuts as described above so as not to distort the basket.

The Telonics speaker is a little deeper than the Black Widow, but it clears the cab, no modification needed. The biggest thing you immediately notice is the weight reduction. This amp is surprisingly heavy with the original Black Widow fitted; with the Telonics speaker fitted it's more manageable. It surprisingly retained a lot of the NV400 sound - it makes you realize how much the design of the cab and pre/power amp voicing shapes the Peavey sound - I liked it!
