Buying a Steel in US and Bringing it back?

Postby Martin Cox » Thu May 22, 2025 9:59 am

Hi

I’ve been learning steel for a while and am happy with the the Sierra Artist I have. However, I’m taking a holiday in Nashville in a few weeks and was thinking, perhaps this might be an opportunity to save some money on an upgrade to a double neck (or not?). If they sell cheaper over there, and I can bring it back as luggage, I might save on price on the instrument and shipping/import taxes? Has anyone any experience of this? Any advice much appreciated!

Many thanks

Hi Martin
I bought two steels in the U.S.(at different times)
it may cost You some $ at the return flight due to weight.I am not sure if there is a weight resrtiction, An SD 10 would be about 55lbs but a D10 would be a bit more, I would suggest making enquiries before going the States
Be aware that if You do not declare Your purchase at arrival there is always the chance that a customs officer will question You if You go thru' the green.
I have never heard of anyone being (caught) at customs.
Good luck

Hope this helps.
Good luck
Billy.
