Boss ZB Student

Postby adam » Mon May 25, 2015 11:31 am

Hi All

Thinking of parting with this one. I've moved house and don't really have the room anymore.

She's a bit rough round the edges. I believe it used to belong to Belong to Zebedee on here.

There are three foot pedals but only two are in use it its current set-up. There are four knee levers.

It's the only psg I've ever sat at so don't have anything to compare it too. The sound is lovely - I've put it through my musicman amp and it's terrific.
I'm guessing Bob Dixon in Bristol will be known around these parts. He very kindly gave it the once over and gave the workings a little spruce up.

I thought I would see if anyone would be interested, or could give me an idea of its worth.

Thanks for looking

I'm interested in this Adam but not sure what its worth but I'm looking for my 1st psg and this looks like it would fit the bill nicely.

Looking at the pictures it looks like it may have two working knee levers ?? If you can raise and lower the E's with them that would be a good start .... In its present state I would say about 275 would be fair to buyer and seller BUT!, these are not the easiest of guitars to set up and work on and for a newbie that's a tall order...... If RB owned it you can be sure it worked ok then....... Roger if you buy it I would suggest you locate a repair man in your area first that can fix it for you...
My mate Les tell's me "if its got tits or tyres its gonna cost you money", this can also apply to dilapidated steel guitars

It is indeed my old ZB Student that I gigged in the early nineties.

Unfortunately, it looks as though it has lost some of my modifications, which were added to make the steel super-easy to play (mechanically), but it still has the 4 knee levers and the adjustable half stop on it.

It is also minus the 'C' pedal linkage, the same as it was all those years ago, when my younger self deemed the 'C' pedal surplus to requirements

£300 to £400, maybe more if you ebay it.

I would like to have it back, just for old times sake (as I sold it to fund a new stair carpet ) , but I just can't justify having another steel, my house isn't the Tardis :D

I've just looked closely at the underside pics, and see that some of my more important mods are still extant, namely the pedal and lever adjustable stops, which make a world of difference to the playability of a ZB (no more 'sponginess)

It appears that the adjustable helper springs have been removed, which is a shame :(

I also noticed that the pivot bolt for the 'A' pedal needs tightening up, it's quite a critical area :)

There is your answer Roger..... All you have to do is get RB to work his magic on it again and you will have a good working guitar at a reasonable price..... or, you can "Bite the Bullet " and go straight to a pro machine where your satisfaction will last a little longer ..... :D

After thinking about it I 'm going to change my mind on this and keep saving for a pro guitar....sorry Adam.
I'll keep on non pedallin' for now :)
I do normally try and follow the advice of a furniture dealer I used to know which always sticks in my head "Buy mint, you'll never be skint" problem is the mint stuff is beyond my purchasing power at the moment.
I'll try and hang fire for a couple of months and look for something fully working

Roger, the cheapest steel on the market that plays like a pro guitar is Dave Seddons, its a great looking lightweight steel and would be an ideal choice for you.. check out his you tubes.....

Adam
I used to sell ZB guitars back in the 1970's. I have played hundreds of pedal steels over the years, and I always say that one guitar that I played from the ZB range had just exceptional tone. That guitar happened to be a black plastic topped ZB Student model. It sounded better than many pro guitars that I have played. 8-)
