Hi all,
Based on what I've read, I'd say your man is Pete Haywood. I recall seeing him play a few times way back. He played a D10, Red(?) Emmons and I've NEVER seen anyone check his tunings so quickly using harmonics before or since!

As I recall, his daughter - Rosey - played drums with Sarah Jory for some time.

OK, I'm happy with that.

Wish I could get confirmation that he made a steel guitar album in 81/2. The funny thing is I didn't think much of it and was certainly disappointed after seeing him play live 2 or 3 times where, as you remember, he was quite something!

I know there are 3 tracks of Pete Haywood on YouTube, but to my ears, the material and, even more, the "mix" are so bad I can't say either do the man I saw playing live justice. But then, not everyone will necessarily agree with me there (I'm used to that though...Ha!)

Pete Haywood used a D10 Sho~Bud, and following a meeting with Buddy Emmons at a local theatre to him, Pete invited Buddy to his home and Buddy accepted. After Buddy showing Pete some stuff, he convinced Pete to offload his Sho~Bud and buy an Emmons from either him or Emmons Inc. Pete subsequently imported a black D10 push pull and has owned it since.

Dave Hayward couldn't have been the guy you are talking about, as I have never know him to play C6. Pete H is almost certainly the best C6 player to have come out of the UK.

Pete Haywood bought a Rosewood mica Emmons. He now has my Black Emmons which I purchased from Eric Snowball. I agree he is probably UKs finest player. Good mate too!!!

Thanks for correcting my errors Derek. Sometimes things get out of synch over the years. The last time I got to see Pete H was in Zurich around 1980 when he was playing with Poacher in a gig at the Hallen Stadium on a Mervyn Conn extravaganza. Gerry Hogan was playing with Matchbox and I was with a band backing Rose Marie Kane.

How did you get on with the Emmons Derek?

Hi Ken. Loved the Emmons tone it stiff to play. I sold it for funds on new business.
I remember in I think 1979 doing Wembley and was setting up next to another steel player with an Emmons and asked him if he found his stiff and rattly due to the mechanism. He said yeah but worth it for the tone…. turned out to be Buddy!!!Doh!

And good to know (from Ken) that Pete H did once play a ShoBud. I think that clinches it. Before I get completely lost in the (your) Emmons discussion, I played an Emmons PP S10 for nearly 40 years. Very stiff, considerable pedal travel and rattles galore. but I did play it for nearly 40 years, which I guess says something. I prefer the Williams though...sacrilege!!!
