Polly the old Gene Clark tune

Postby rogerp1 » Sun Oct 30, 2016 3:24 pm

Here's me on my GFI attempting an old Gene Clark tune. Been playing pedal steel just over a year but struggling to get much practice time. Recorded this as I'm trying to find a tone I like on this guitar so thought I may as well post it. It's a bit basic but hopefully some of you will chime in with tips and suggestions to make it sound better :D

Nice choice, Roger. I've been working on that one the last couple of months with a local guy called Rod Dujardin who sings and plays guitar. He likes to write his own stuff - which I think is good - but also loves to do these old numbers.

You have some dood moves going on there Roger, if you have that down after one year just think where you will be in another year, it aint easy but Im sure all will agree its down to practice, practice and more practice, your doing well.

I play through a Roland cube 40 XL. Although I use the clean channel more often than not, the lead channel set to Black face gives a bit more 'bite'. I also have all tone knobs set full on - but I don't use any effects pedals, just whatever is on the amp.
Great tune BTW. Gene Clark - one of the greats!

Yeah I've been struggling with the cube, it sounded great with my shobud but every amp sounds great with that....the GFI is a bit tough to get a good tone. It sounds better through a valve amp, also gonna try a Lawrence 705 in it to see what that does

Roger I use the Cube 80XL but not the onboard FX - I use an external delay and reverb pedal. My settings are:

Bass 12 o'clock - Mid 10 o'clock - Treble 11 o'clock - Presence 9 o'clock. Your settings on this seem to rob the top-end "bite" needed for good tone. Just my ears though...

Yeah if I up the treble it tends to sound too harsh when I get up past the 12th fret, sounds good through my 5w Fender champ which is really trebly but not harsh........I'll get there eventually. I do get a better tone through a Roland Microcube strangely enough

Put an L705 pickup in the GFI and it sounds a lot better......has a single coil sound to it and brings out the Fender sound of the guitar.....I'm back in love with the Cube again
