Yes, Allan Kelly turned me on to Mr Overbey, fantastic.

Play strings 5,6 and 8 with A pedal, then with A&B, then release both pedals and go up two frets. Is that the beginning of the move? (I sound like a bad magician saying "is that your card?" Probably totally wrong!) I don't have my pedal steel in front of me but that's my guess.

I recognised the lick from the one instrumental I know well which is 'Sunday in Dixie' by Buddy Emmons and Shot Jackson (and it's probably the stand out lick in that tune too). Otherwise I wouldn't have had a stab at it. Deceptively simple but yes, pure pedal steel gold. Dickey goes on to another level with it.

That's a pretty common move on E9. What actually makes this piece are the use of his open top G# string and open top E (not both at the same time), plus some beautiful bar slants. He certainly can make his guitar weep.

Dicky was the one player I wanted to see live but never got the opportunity I posted on the American forum how much I loved his playing, and very much to my surprise received a PM from Dicky himself despite his poor health he took the time to thank me for my interest in him and his playing.He was a very humble and modest man, no ego, just a very nice gentle ordinary man, who said to me, "if there is anything you want to know just ask, be happy to help" . I think I have worn out my cd's of him, both the instrumentals and the absolutely amazing backing he did on his step daughter Amber Digby's cd's.
