Why The Obsession With Rebuilding ?

Why are steels that are only a few years old, and in working order, routinely rebuilt to original specs, when it would be much better to either leave them alone, or improve on the ergonomics/mechanics, rather than the generic factory settings ?

Good question, but surely has to be the choice of the owner, from my experience, (certainly with a certain date range of Sho Buds) wear and tear was a major issue, even in fairly new(ish) models. I think the use of what they term as 'pot metal 'was a main breakdown issue, hence the need to rebuild, using new parts to the same build specs. LDGs as good a steel as they are have been culprits, parts wear after a short period has for many owners been a big issue.
Just my view.
I do understand what your asking, but doubt anyone would spend the dosh and take the risk of a refurb unless it was to be beneficial.

Yes Dave,
I get what you're saying about steels that are using inferior metals, sure, it doesn't hurt to rebuild them with better quality components, but at the same time, improve the playability of the steel by redesigning those components so that they function better, and mount the components in the best place for the player, not where the manufacturer deemed to be the best place.

Steels that are/were factory-made are made to a price, they have to be, otherwise the manufacturer would go out of business, they can't custom-build every steel.

I have modded every steel that I've had, and done some for other players as well, they can all be improved, some of them very easily.
I remember adding a few helper springs to my Carter, which didn't take hardly any time at all, making it a much more user-friendly steel.

I can see your point on older steels Zebedee. But if I'd bought a brand new one from the factory and felt it still needed modding I'd be highly dischuffed.

I've only bought one from new and it played smooth as butter. If it ain't broke........
