Scary,,,practise + practise Lest we forget

Postby JohnDavisStringsHere » Mon Apr 12, 2021 12:59 pm

Go to your Steel and try to play something you mastered a couple of years ago..... I am here to tell you it does not always work, you can learn it and play it beautifully but if you do not revisit that toon every now and then it fades from your fingers........ I guess this is where readers have a real advantage be it Tab or music but playing from what you remember and your on dodgy ground!..

Absolutely, John. I can testify to this occurrence. At the Gartcosh meetings there was, usually, two tunes to learn and perform. Sadly, now I wouldn't have a clue where to start with any of them. Pathetic really.
USE IT OR LOSE IT.......you have been warned!

JD, of course you right, I often wished I had to learned to read. Once I learn a tune I need to be able to come back to regularly or asDanny said it’s not easy to sit down and remember how you played it in the past. The reader and the musicians amongst us don’t have that problem. The first song I learnt or was taught years ago was Danny boy which I regularly play through with many others.
Also old age don’t help

Hi John, you posted 'Linda on my mind' on the forum 17/03/2019 in this folder. Maybe a look will jog your memory.

Well you are right Billy but that was awful about the same as what I did today and on an MSA that toon needs to be played on an Emmons IMHO. I will do it again I reckon....

I aint played the steel for a year or listened to much music.
At least my head has stopped trying to work out licks all the time.
I nearly went mad once because of this, John knows.
I think I would still be okay if I got back on it.
We will see one day.

Just in case any newer recruits to the forum missed it, here is the jam session I was referring to in the previous post. I think it's absolutely fabulous, what music is all about to me. 2 people batting it back and forth :guitar:
I can't believe it was 4 years ago....Whoa Nelly!

David you don't even figure in this discussion, it does not apply to you, you are an exceptional talent and yes I know what it has cost you in the head department to establish your place at the front and when/if you decide to play again I think we all know you will still be there.
This topic is really for old farts like me and the kindred spirits on here that are just about getting away with it for the amount of effort we put in, and we really are (as age creeps on) in the use it or lose it department.
