Not so Bent, I stood in Al Brisco`s shop and listened to him playing a C/S ....It made you want one!... so glad I resisted, we don`t all have magic in our hands and some of us need all the help we can get! IMHO stick with a pro guitar

C'mon John that ain't fair, it's not everyone that can afford to have 3 or 4 pro models hangin' about doing nothing and if we're being honest about it, you haven't done to badly from selling student models over the years. You know me I like to try different things, that's the way I am but there are plenty of people who have been grateful for a CS to learn on 'til they could afford a pro model and I wouldn't mind betting there are a lot who were glad they didn't buy a pro model because they couldn't master it and may very well have lost money.

I guess we are gonna see this differently Dave, I know a few people that have bought them new for the retail price of around £800 and on selling lucky to get 450/ 500 back but, a good used pro guitar for just a little more will always return your investment. I don`t recall ever selling one myself, though I have sold ZB student (built like a brick S&$thouse, and an Emmons "Black Rock" but I would always reccomend a newbie to get a pro guitar. You have been blessed with a talent that could make anything sound good but your average newbie gonna struggle with one of those IMHO....

John, I didn't want to start a discussion about Starter vs Pro. The only point I was making is that Dave certainly makes ANY steel sound great. As Lloyd Green would say - he has a direct connection between his right hand and his brain.

I fully agree with the point you have made Bent, and there are quite a few out there like Dave who have that magic touch, I can name a few if you like? Richard Burton is one that will make any steel sound great..... though he does fit his own turbo`s on them first.... (it is not your standard "student" guitar! ) , a guy called Jack (forget his surname but he was the only steelplayer in the Seychelles) had a "Fender" re-badged Maverick and though it was a 10 string he only had 8 on it and they were rusty! but he could play so sweetly on it. A guy I met in Vancouver called Ben Mayo who had built his own steel and the string spaceings were almost as wide as the Mississippi ( slight exaggeration there ) his tone bar was so long that he had fashioned a hook on it to go around his finger to get more control.... but he could play any tune you cared to name and the sound was beautyiful. Dave and I have been friends long enough to have a dissagreement now and then but he is a treasure and I have envied that left hand technique ever since I first heard him play.... about 35 years ago at a Stevenage (Walkern) charity gig.
