As for the US...they really don't want to deal with us do they?

$48 to $89 postage to get small fry items over here..... stick it! It is ridiculous! Then charges here on top of that! Stuff it!

There is something vastly wrong, I recently sent fretboards over to mid America...... as in 'the serious sticks' ..for the princely sum of £14.50

On the flip side I bought a fretboard at $35 .... when I finally got here it it had cost me $105 .....Never again and I mean never again!

Something way wrong! It would seem that suddenly they have jumped on the wagon of 'stick it up all things east'!
Well let them! .......... It could be a big mistake!

Some of the guys from the UK have tackled the Yanks on the US steel forum as to why they won't ship outside of the USA. The vast majority of responders all came up with the same excuse - 'too much hassle'. Apparently they have a lot of rigmarole to go through at the US Post Office, or the shipping company in the case of a steel guitar. I tackled Bobbe Seymour on this subject on one trip to his store, and got the 'too much hassle' response. I told him that if he could afford to lose all of that trade then he was doing well. He just shrugged his shoulders.

Not all of the guys in the US are unhelpful when it comes to exporting to the UK and Europe. Billy Knowles, Tom Bradshaw, Clem Schmitz, Michael Yahl, Gary Sill, Jimmie Hudson and Live Strings company are just a few of the folks who are more than happy to deal with us and take the effort to get an actual shipping price from the shipper rather than conjure up a figure off the top of their head. There are many more over there, and it is worth while sifting through the many sellers of gear over there to find the good ones. A word of warning - few if any will try to help you get the purchased items through customs without you having to make any payment. We just have to swallow that one.

When I go to the Dallas Show each year I make sure that if there is anything on my shopping list that I buy it over there and bring it back. That includes strings, CDs, DVDs, PSG parts, accessories and the like. I buy 100 sets of strings in one go and get the best deal that I can. Once home I store them in a dry and warm environment. I last bulk bought strings 3 years ago and I still have a good supply here.

Having said all of this, Bob Adams' box of parts is brilliant for getting those 'hard to get' bits and pieces that we need from time to time. His Emmons fretboards are incredible and well worth a look.

Many years ago I tried to buy a volume pedal from Saymore's store, I was told by them , it was too expensive to send it, I pointed out that it was me who was paying for shipping so what was problem , to be told it was too much hassle.The too much hassle involved is actually about twenty seconds to fill in the customs declaration.I never used them again.A friend of mine tried to buy a new Mullen from them, they never replied to emails or calls. There are some good guys over there, Tom Bradshaw, Keith Hilton, Mike at Mullen, MSA, Jeff Surratt, etc, but there are a lot of intraverted muppets who do not know anything exists outside of their own state let alone Country.Well done to Bob for making these parts available to us at reasonable prices.

I must add another helpful guy. It's Bob Diekmeier of GFI. I had an early model GFI Ultra for some serious repair and needed a set of keyless-tuner knobs, some tuner levers and various other parts. I sent some photos of the parts; he priced them up, guessed at $15 for shipping and threw in a free set of string-anchor machine screws. I paid on-line and the parts were dispatched within 24 hours. The only hold up was with UK customs who wanted some VAT (it was below the threashold for duty). A real annoyance was that Royal Mail charged £8.00 for collecting the £7.52 VAT and held up the shipping by a week
By the way, the guitar ended up like new and it's very impressive The keyless head and general aesthetic are "different" but the tone, tuning stability and action are spot on. And it's light! Also it is by far the easiest design to work on that I've tackled so far. A real credit to the late Gene Fields' genius.

I'd like to second Tony's addition, as I found Bob at GFI very helpful indeed. Once, when I ordered wings/flags for my knee levers and again when I purchased a pedal kit, which was fitted by none other, than, 'the man with the case', Mr Bob Adams. These Bobs are good to know
