new country is alive and well

Mon Jan 17, 2011 11:54 pm

This young man, from County Carlow, proves that country is alive and well in Ireland, he has started to attract a bit of attention for himself, this is obviously pre recorded, theres a dobro in there, but not apparent in the band, but shows a very good voice, cant help thinking the band needs two things though, a bit of livening up and a Steel guitarist, i like the look of the guitarists blonde piggy back fender set up though, i think we may hear more of this singer

I gigged with this young fella, Eddie Carey from County limerick, a couple of months ago, and he can really handle the Gene Watson stuff, but he didn't know what i was talking about when i called him Marty Hopkirk [deceased] in the dressing room, just before the gig, another up and coming country singer methinks

I only met this young fella last weekend, we did a gig in Westport, no rehearsal, but went really well, another up and coming country singer from County Mayo, hope to work with him in the near future and play steel on his next CD, which he starts work on very soon,

This guy, Gerry Guthrie, comes from about 9 miles from me in Ballina, County Mayo, a very good guitar player in his own right, just recently turned pro,and launched his own band and is further proof country is alive and kicking in Ireland, the gigs and the money has taken a hit in the last two years, cos the recession is bad here, but we wil play our way out of it, 'Keepin' it Country'

Mick Flavin did not sing with Richard Nelson at the IPSGF 2010. I think, Bob, you're thinking of Jim Finnegan with whom Richard occasionally plays as part of a George Strait tribute show.

Here's another great Irish singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N4UnApTgLY
Ray Murtagh (my singer).

Richard is the regular steelie with Mick Flavin on his gigs, but last year, there was a charity event this side of the country, and Mick Flavin was down to sing 8 or 9 songs, all we got was a set list and keys, but we all played ok'ish, i was a bit self concious about Mick comparing me to Richard, cos Richard is class, and pretty damn hard to follow, but Mick was very gracious to the band, and shook my hand and thanked me, despite the fact that he doesn't often get a good press from other musicians for his attitude, it did help that he brought along his keyboard player though, [or did the keyboard player bring his singer]
Ray Murtagh is a class singer, great voice, good image, but i love the fact paul, that you described him as 'my singer' i have always resented singers introducing me as 'their' lead guitarist or steelie, and i always retorted by saying 'no im not, your my singer'
