To Flip or not to Flip that is the question ????

This Left Handed Bennett looks to be in a bit of a mess but it is a well built bit of kit and has had little use, it has just been neglected and is receiving TLC at the moment but owing to a shortage of lefties I am tempted to turn it into a rightie, it will be a lot of work but at least then I would be able to play it.....waddaya think?

Flip, John, flip!

If the build quality can be maintained during the process (and I can't imagine how this is done!! Respect due!), then this guitar deserves to be getting played, and I think there's more of a chance of it finding a good home somewhere in that greater pool of right handed pickers.

Well! are there any Nay sayers?? I don't want the Flip to Flop but you are convincing me....... so much so, I have made blanking plate for the transportation of holes but still not committed to the abortion until I rip her guts out..... I have some weld at home low temp. aluminium and if I go ahead the end plates would not look too shabby...

Hi JD. My name is John and I am also left-handed! Put me down as a naysayer. When I started for the first time all those decades ago, I searched in vain for a lefty steel before buying a righty. As a consequence, I (attempt to) play all my stuff in the conventional way as mentioned in other posts. Try giving it a little more time before deciding to flip. You never know!

I happened to see that 'Pedal Steel Guitar' by Winnie Winston and Bill Kieth states (P.11) that:

' One author of this book is left handed and plays a normal steel with no handicap. And, if that isn't enough, Lloyd Green and Curly Walker are also left-handed....'

My view is that it should be left as a LH lap steel. My reasoning is that LH lap steels are not that readily available and secondly if I were a left handed non player thinking of taking up the lap steel I would much prefer to have LH steel rather that having to adapt to playing a RH lap steel which in my opinion would initially impede my progress. For the record I am right handed.

Richard, these are not "lap steels" but fully blown pedal steels the Bennett has 3 plus 5 but thank you for your input there will be no flipping at this time not until i have exhausted the poss. Of re=homing as is................

Apologies my mistake I meant pedal steel, having played pedal steel for almost 60 years I am aware of the difference. I am pleased that for the moment you are not going to convert it and I hope that you can find a good home for it soon.
