import/export tax??????????

Postby STEDDIE EDDIE » Mon Jan 03, 2011 4:09 pm

not strictly steel guitar, but relevent, anyone have experience in bringing an item in from the states, and what charges i will be liable for on the doorstep, i think its U.S. export tax, but not entirely sure, i just bought a beautiful looking G & L LEGACY, [guitars by leo] swamp ash body, made in the original pre cbs fender factory, fullerton, california for what i believe to be a bargain 700 euro, i think it will be a percentage of the price i paid, but not sure, anyone???????

the guitar is currently on route to Ireland, and hopefully this week will join the herd

Eddie,
Nice guitar.
I am not really sure but You will probably pay Vat at the current rate and also an import duty.
I am not sure of VAT in Euroland though
Crowbear would be the best guy to answer this Question.
Good luck

Eddie,

Here in the UK, import duty is charged on the price of the goods plus the cost of postage and insurance
The VAT is then charged on the total price of the above including import duty.

I think the import duty was about 2.5% at the time I did it.

Rules may be different in Ireland. Have a look on the Irish Government Revenue website
and you should get all you need there, or a contact number you can telephone.

George

By the way, I received an invoice for duty and VAt by post from the shippers which I had to pay by credit card
before the goods left the airport.

Billy & George are about right
you'll have to pay VAT on the goods + shipping & insurance as well as an slight import logistics fee

some eec countries are not always ON the case, such as France, so that the fees to pay end up being a poker hand
fedex, ups & such, work for the revenue collectors & apply maximum costs
the postal system is imo the better solution if the size & weight of the goods can go that way
this pertains to France mind you

Happy healthy & swingin' new year guys

I used a G&L Legacy Special and an Asat Classic for several years. Great guitars. Superbly well built and fantastic value for money. If you're one of those for whom it does not have to say Fender or Gibson on the head stock these are fantastic instruments.

I would strongly argue they are the REAL fender in everything but name, cos CBS bought and owned the name and moved production to a new facility so they could mass produce guitars, leo remained at the helm of G & L in the original factory, along with George Fullerton, until Leo's death in 1991, and he was then succeeded by his widow,
ps. still waiting on delivery

i am to collect the guitar from my local post office tommorrow morning, and 120.90 euro to pay, about £100, so not too bad, makes the guitar 805 euro about £669 plus about £85 shipping from the States,
