Pickups - Humbucker or Single Coils

What sort of pickups does everyone use?

My Marlen from 1975 has got single coil pickups and I think it sounds fantastic.

Am I right thinking that modern steel pickups like Alumitones and George Ls are humbuckers and that single coil pickups aren't so common anymore?

Why is this? I suppose humbuckers do cancel hum, but single coils are still perfectly acceptable to guitar players these days..
