John, I listened to your version from Saturday, but I don't think it sounds like what Mike plays. The crucial thing is to get the 5th string ringing at fret 5 (the second note) then slide it up to fret 8 while it is still ringing for the third note.
What you are doing isn't sounding like that, and you don't get the sound of all the strings ringing together and overlapping, which only happens at fret 8. I'm happy that my version sounds like what Mike does, and the neat thing about doing this is (1) it's not what you would be expecting to do (key of D doesn't usually stop at 8) and (2) it's a good general lick to get from the 1 chord (D)to the 4 chord (G), via the 7th (D7).
I know you don't dig explanations like that, and it's a pity you don't read tab, as the tab shows how it works, but I can *show* you next time I drop by.
