Like the Day setup .. It is the natural string progression low to high as on any other instrument!

A whole new tuning ball game! ???

Bob, I think the answer is you could do a lot! I think we have all heard of Zane King. He uses a development of Zane Beck's tuning, which basically does what you suggest, with the strings laid out in pitch order. It contains a couple of C# strings too, so he calls it the E6/9 tuning (or is it E9/6?)

It's a long term project of mine to look into it and give it a try.
