New player...

Sun Feb 05, 2017 10:54 am

Hi All......introduced myself a few days on the new members thread.....

Posted on Steelies as well hopefully for some advice.......

Now in possession of my lap steel and Shubb Bar.....restrung with C6 La Bella.....

First challenge ...holding the bar....do I just let it rest on the strings or do I apply some downward pressure please...

A bit hit & miss on first attempts with rogue notes and strings sounding off......not as easy as it looks!...

Cheers, Paul...

Hi Paul, for lap steel (dobro is different) I would recommend you get a bullet nose bar before you get too used to the Shubb. There are some slants that you just can't do without the bullet nose. Sorry for that that being a little late!
Shubbs are popular with dobro players to pull the bar off a string leaving it sounding, common in dobro technique. That is the only thing that is easier with them (imho).
In either case you should give the weight of the bar just a very little help by pressing down gently; just enough to keep it in contact with the strings. Hold ("guide" is maybe a better word) the bar between thumb and middle finger, first finger along the top. And use picks for a better tone and angle of picking attack.
