2nd week of steel guitar

Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:40 pm

hi all

i'm into my second week of owning a steel guitar and have had chance to briefly jam with a friend on guitar with it, all purely guess work at moment and just getting used to the feel of it. been playing in C6 tuning as its what ive gathered to be recommended at this stage, managed to come up with a few licks here and there, only thing is i feel like i'm hitting a brick wall already. i've been trying to search the internet for recommended tracks to listen and learn at my stage in C6 or similar and just cannot get any accurate results back, it seems odd, as with other instruments etc like normal guitar you usually get a recommended beginner track or two!!

can someone recommend me a list of songs to try playing that i can locate on youtube etc, i feel learning some covers will help me take off and get more used to finding my way around the steel guitar and used to positions etc.

cheers :D

I think whoever told you that C6 was the tuning to start learning pedal steel on is currently enjoying a bit of schadenfreude :D

E9 is more usual for beginners, there is a lot of teaching material out there, just look on youtube

If it is a lap steel, then a 6th tuning makes sense. E9 is primarily for pedal steel, but I don't know if you have one.

cheers fellas .... its a former pedal steel i'm playing but without the pedals, its an old Multi-Kord 1949 twin 8, but thanks for the advice regarding E9 etc also, i guess its debatable, i dunno!! ive had a good few messages back regarding all this and appreciating it massively, i just need to get myself a good program sorted to get me on the right track now. i'll get myself on over to youtube and check out everything soon. fingers crossed it goes well!! cheers

Richard and Ken - it's a de-pedalled MultiKord, a twin-8 consul guitar not a PSG.
Bruce, I reckon you should be looking at E13 on the second neck. That'll give you something to play with until you know enough to make your own choices. Any other suggestions out there? Ken might have some ideas, he is more than competant on non-pedal guitars.
BTW I've sent you some more excercises by email, hope the tab comes out OK. Tony.

Whoops, my mistake
For some reason I'd assumed it was a pedal steel, it didn't cross my mind that it might be a non-pedal.

I know nothing of lap steel tunings, except that E9 is not standard

My non-pedal experience was playing e7 and then on to E13. One of the best swing players ever (Tom Morrell) was an E13 aficionado, but Basil H is far more qualified than I'll ever be on non pedal tuning options.

Absolutely Ken. (For the pedallists, E13 is basically an Emaj chord with a 7th and a 6th tone added in the [in this case, 8 string] tuning). However, Bas is on the case too :D so no worries!
All best everyone, T.

bump!

i started this thread ages ago ... anyway since, i have gotten that busy that i kind of strayed away from practising more, however i'm getting it back out again! i've been listening to a lot of steel players and trying to gather inspiration ...

i may have mentioned i'd bought that twin 8 steel guitar with the pedals missing, the old Multi-Kord off Tony who posts on here .... what's the best to tune both 8 strings to??? i was listening to some older players from way back and i think one in particular i was listening to was playing in E9 etc. I'm still a bit lost to be honest though as to how i should be going about things. what tunings are most advisable for twin 8 in general etc? i have a whole bunch of people telling me different things all the time haha

i need a kick up the arse and put this thing to good use, get to understand how things work more etc. any more help/advice would be great thx!
