First Aid Kit - Emmylou

Postby Keith Wilson » Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:48 pm

Hi - It was nice to hear some good pedal steel on Radio 2 this week!

Chris Evans had a live session of First Aid Kit - they played Emmylou - a track off their cd - The Lion's Raw.

Could this be the beginning of a bit of a renaissance for pedal steel - the younger generation seem to be into First Aid Kit.

Any one got any ideas who the steel player is. The sisters are from Sweden - is it a Swedish member of the Forum?

Melvin Duffy is touring with First Aid Kit (I think BJ has done some gigs too), dont think Melvin recorded on the album though, great steel sound whoever it was.

here's a vid from Letterman with Melvin

I highly recommend seeing First Aid Kit live, they were easily the best thing at this year's Green Man Festival and I'm looking forward to taking my wife to see them at Hammersmith Odeon in January. The songwriting and harmonies are really wonderful overall, reminiscent of Paul Simon in places. Melvin does a great job and there is pedal steel on the most of the songs in their set. I really like what Mike Mogis played on the new album too - the latest single 'Master Pretender' (all over BBC 6 Music) has a nice muted rhythm pattern, most clearly heard from about 1:15, the kind of thing loads of guitarists play but it's rare to hear done on pedal steel. Not something you learn from a Jeff Newman course but a technique worth mastering.

I saw First Aid Kit at Newcastle City Hall last night! They were great - Melvin Duffy was super on steel guitar. It was nice to see that the audience cheered as soon as they heard the pedal steel opening to Emmylou!

Can't recommend them enough!

Caught First Aid Kit on the Graham Norton show last night, I thought they were excellent, must get their CD. Very interesting line up, any band that's featuring pedal steel and mandolin are right up my strasse.
It will be repeated late on Monday I think, and I'm assuming that it's available on iPlayer. Well worth a gander.
