strings vary in pitch after picking

Sun Nov 11, 2012 12:41 am

I've got some tuning problems and part of it is that when I pick a string hard, it starts off fairly sharp and then settles to the pitch it's meant to be.
Is there anything I can to do sort this out?

thanks

Can you actually hear the difference or are you observing it on a tuning meter?

both, I saw it on the meter first, but it is quite a lot.

i was wondering if it was a string gauge thing?

You're pickin' to hard I reckon.

Dont check with meter, they are too accurate, use your ears!

Also, if youre picking open strings, it will be worse as the srtring length that's vibrating is bigger.

I recommend not to use 20 plain on the 6th, use 22 plain, and use 18 plain on the 5th.

My fault is that I put too much hand weight on top of my bar and lower strings go sharp. Its easily compensated by practice, playing behind fret a bit or adding vibrato.

thanks very much David, I've been thinking my picking style could do with bit of refinement. I'll get practising..!
