Steel guitar tuition and instruction material

I find that if I try and play a chord using the 2nd and 3rd strings, the 2nd string is overpoweringly loud, and even though the note on the 3rd string is higher it doesn't stand out.
I know there are various different ranges of string gauges to address this, but they haven't helped me.
I was just wondering what everyone else did about it?
Do you just have to hit the 3rd harder?
Cheers,
Henry

depends whether you have a single coil, humbucker or p90 type as to what height they should be from the strings. generally, about two 2p pieces between P/u and strings for the base side, one for the treble side. have a browse on the web for your pickup type for more info. must be something on there.
